Great Debate Class Offers Perspectives on Competing Lighting Systems

Debating seems like the common thing to do recently. Congress is debating major financial bailouts and our nation continues to watch the debates between the presidential candidates, so there’s no better time to debate on lighting trends than now.
Debating is exactly what will be done at the Venture Lighting Institute (VLI) on November 3, a day prior to one of our nations biggest Election Day’s ever! However, in this debate, it isn’t the issues that are debated but the technology. For several years now, a substantial swing has been made by the fluorescent fixture manufactures in lighting environments that were, and are, traditionally metal halide.
Many experts agree that the push to this technology has been due to successful marketing campaigns that have driven the cost down of a fluorescent system significantly. The other major success factor for these systems has been energy savings. This includes states that have offered large budgets for rebates through major energy companies. The lighting packages that have been targeted are industrial high-bays, big box applications or retail wholesalers and even outdoor parking garages. These applications five to ten years ago would have only been metal halide.
Several advances in the technology have allowed end-users and consumers to believe these are the best solutions.
